Megan H. Assey is a native of Salisbury, North Carolina, and earned her bachelor’s degree in Media Studies and English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she was a four-year Division I women’s basketball student-athlete. Following graduation, she began her collegiate coaching career at Clemson University while simultaneously earning a master’s degree in Human Resource Development. She later continued coaching at Charleston Southern University, further developing her passion for mentoring and student development.
Now entering her 16th year in public education, Megan has built a distinguished career as a coach and educational leader. Throughout her career, she has served as a classroom teacher, head women’s basketball coach, athletic administrator, and career development professional, consistently focusing on student achievement both inside and outside the classroom.
Megan spent 9 years at Spring Valley High School in Richland School District Two, where she was a member of the English Department, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, and Assistant Athletic Director. During her coaching tenure, she led the Lady Vikings to consecutive South Carolina 5A State Championship appearances in 2018 and 2019, capturing the 5A State Championship in 2018. That same year, she was honored as the USA Today South Coach of the Year. Under her leadership, 16 student-athletes earned opportunities to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level.
Currently entering her third year as a Ready to Work Job Coach with the Career and College Initiatives team, Megan is dedicated to preparing students for success beyond high school by helping them develop the academic, professional, and workplace skills needed to thrive in college and their future careers.
Outside of her professional responsibilities, Megan enjoys spending time with her husband, Charles, who serves as Head of School at Cardinal Newman School, their two children, and their two dogs.
Megan is passionate about empowering students to reach their full potential. She believes that by fostering organization, preparation, accountability, and self-confidence, students can develop the skills and mindset necessary to achieve lifelong personal and professional success. Her mission is to inspire every student to recognize their strengths, pursue their goals with purpose, and become productive, successful members of their communities.
